Lesson 8 - Heat Exchangers
This lesson focuses on the two main heat exchangers found in breweries, namely plate heat exchangers and shell and tube heat exchangers. The lesson will examine the components, assembly, and operation of these exchangers. It will also discuss how to select and size a heat exchanger and the considerations for cleaning, maintaining, and operating heat exchangers in the brewing process.
Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Tube Design and Configuration
In the previous section, we discovered that there are many parts to a shell and tube exchanger. However, there is only one component where heat transfer actually occurs – the tube bundle. Let’s learn more about the design and fabrication of this key component.
Imagine you took a handful of straws and held them in your fist, tightly packed together in the same direction. How could you maximise the total surface area of the straws in your hand?
