Lesson 2 - Malt Intake, Handling, and Storage
This lesson details the principles and operations of malt intake, handling, and storage. It explains how and why malt is checked on delivery to the brewery. It also covers how it is taken in, processed, and stored, as well as how safety is maintained during malt handling.
Destoners
Like ferrous metal objects, stones can damage equipment and cause sparks that could lead to explosions. We can use a destoner to remove both them and nonferrous metal.
Destoners remove material that is heavier than grain. In the destoner, the air blows up through a moving deck, which is slanted to the grain outlet. In one design, a motor causes the deck to move towards the stone outlet and in another, the deck oscillates, gradually throwing heavier material up the deck. The airflow through the deck is strong enough to lift the grains slightly, and they flow down towards the grain outlet by gravity.
The stones are heavier so are not lifted. The deck moves them over to the stone outlet, where they are removed. The figures below show a destoner and the detail of the deck.
