Lesson 4 - Materials Application in Brewing
In this lesson we will discuss materials and their application in greater detail. This will include understanding their properties, advantages and disadvantages, and their main applications in the brewery. We will place emphasis on the materials most common in the brewing industry.
Point of Reflection – Reconvene:
Welcome back! So, what were your thoughts?
It may seem like stainless steel is the undisputed king of ferrous metals, but cost is an important consideration, so it makes sense to always look for the most economical option.
In dry applications mild steel can be considered, both in structural uses and for cases such as raw material handling.
In structural applications where there is some moisture galvanised steel could be considered.
For all equipment, stainless steel would be the best material. For colder applications use SS304L and for warmer applications (and more corrosive environments) use SS316L.
For applications susceptible to stress corrosion cracking, duplex stainless steel can be used.
