Lesson 4 - Materials Application in Brewing
In this lesson we will discuss materials and their application in greater detail. This will include understanding their properties, advantages and disadvantages, and their main applications in the brewery. We will place emphasis on the materials most common in the brewing industry.
Preface
There is a huge variety of materials of construction in a brewery. We considered the most important properties of these materials in the Classification and Properties lesson. Our choice of materials is almost never a straightforward decision and is often a compromise between a number of properties.
It is important for us to know how best to go about making our decision in choosing them. Luckily, in most cases, the options have been whittled down by suppliers and you are selecting from a narrow range of choices.
Therefore, it is important that for each material application, we understand the requirements of the process and what properties a material must have to function successfully in the environment in which it will be used. Let us first look back at the classification chart we used in the Classification and Properties lesson.
