Lesson 2 - Principles of Fluid Mechanics 1
This lesson considers the unique property of viscosity of fluids (gases and liquids) which allows them to flow. It explores the classification of fluid viscosity behaviour by so-called Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. It will also examine the nature of static fluids, which will include the concept of pressure and head. The lesson finishes with a discussion on the different types of instrumentation for measuring pressure.
Preface
Fluids are substances which can flow. These include liquids as well as gases.
The very nature of brewing which utilises liquids such as brewing water, wort, and beer, as well as gases, such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen and air is critically dependent on being able to move and control these fluids to achieve the consistent manufacture of quality products. In this lesson, we will deal with various fluid mechanics considerations which will allow us to, for example, estimate the pressure at the base of a fermenter or the forces present within a pressurised bright beer tank.
