Lesson 4 - Health and Safety
In this lesson we will discuss key health and safety issues within breweries. It will enable you to understand the primary legislation and how it impacts on management standards, along with occupational hazards and risks.
Take it Home
Health and Safety is not something we should only do at work. We are all exposed to hazards outside the brewery fence, some of us more than others, so it is wise to keep a risk assessment mindset at all time, particularly when:
-
Travelling (driving, walking or cycling)
-
Doing home DIY (do-it-yourself) or gardening
-
Playing sport
Occupational diseases may take many years to manifest themselves, so it is important to get periodic medical check-ups throughout our lives.
Remember our ergonomic assessment from earlier? Are you still sitting correctly? It is easy to let best practice slip, but it is extremely important not to.
Increasingly, there is a realisation that mental health is as important as physical health. Employers are expected to play a more significant role in assisting to safeguard employees mental health in the future.
Finally, as responsible brewers, it is important to remember that there is an unavoidable truth about alcohol. It can be dangerous to a person’s health, and can also cause intoxication, which increases the risk of injury. It is incumbent on members of the industry to promote the responsible use of alcohol.
