Lesson 4 - Health and Safety
In this lesson we will discuss key health and safety issues within breweries. It will enable you to understand the primary legislation and how it impacts on management standards, along with occupational hazards and risks.
Preface
In this lesson, we will learn how to minimise the risk of injury or harm to yourself, to those around you in the workplace, and to others who might be indirectly affected. We start by understanding the importance of taking health and safety seriously, so you strive to make it something you want to do, as well as something you must do.
As most of you will work within an organisation of some kind, we will explore how H&S should be managed, as well as the responsibilities imposed by national legislation. We will spend some time on the important topic of risk assessment while focussing on the identification of hazards within a brewery. The significant risks such as dust explosion and toxic gas exposure will also be explored in some detail.
We will then discuss what happens when, despite all our best efforts, things still go wrong as we need to know how to conduct near miss and accident investigations.
The lesson will end with the advice that heath and safety (H&S) does not stop when you leave the brewery at the end of each day.
