Lesson 4 - Health and Safety
In this lesson we will discuss key health and safety issues within breweries. It will enable you to understand the primary legislation and how it impacts on management standards, along with occupational hazards and risks.
Safety First
You may have heard safety slogans such as: ‘Safety is our #1 priority’, ‘The key to safety is in your hands’ or ‘Safety first, last and always’. The problem is we hear these sayings so often that we tend to ignore them. Because of this, it is easy to think we know everything there is to know, but do we? Statistically, throughout our careers, we are more likely to cause damage to ourselves while sitting at our desks than from falling into beer tanks or getting squashed by forklift trucks.
Desk ergonomics and Display Screen Equipment (DSE).
If you have not come across the term before, ergonomics means “the study of people's efficiency in their working environment”. It is essential from a health and safety point of view with regards to manual handling. For example, ergonomic studies in the brewery may look at how best to carry large bags of malt, or how to lift kegs.
Give yourself 5-10 minutes to consider if your current studying station is set up correctly.
