Point of Reflection – Reconvene

Welcome back! So, what were your thoughts?

begin mathsize 18px style 4 space plus space 8 squared space cross times space left parenthesis 30 over 5 right parenthesis space equals space ? end style

Right, let’s start with the calculation inside the brackets:

begin mathsize 18px style open parentheses 30 over 5 close parentheses space equals space 6 end style

This give us begin mathsize 18px style space 4 space plus space 8 squared space cross times space 6 space equals ? end style

Then we calculate the exponents – in this case, 8 squared:

82 = 64

Our calculation is now:

4 + 64 × 6

Then move to the multiplication:

64 × 6 = 384

Finally, we do the addition:

4 + 384 = 388

Check for errors

It’s easy to get distracted when undertaking multiple actions and lose sight of what you are looking for. The answer should be in the range you are expecting, and don’t forget to include the units. If the question is how warm a bath should be and your answer is 4x1012 K (really, really hot), something has gone wrong, and you need to look back through your workings and units.

To help reinforce what we have just learned, on the next page there are some practice questions. Answers and explanations can be revealed by clicking on show answer.
