Maths for Diploma Studies
This lesson is designed to provide the background knowledge in maths required to study CIBD Diplomas successfully. It will describe the basics of maths before detailing the more complex concepts encountered in CIBD lessons. Techniques for working with numbers, equations, and units will also be described.
Rearranging Equations – Working with Logarithms Reinforcement Questions
1.
Isolate b in the equation below:
We can start by getting on its own by moving
across the equals sign by multiplying both sides by it:
Now we can simply exponentiate both sides to make an exponent of 10 and cancel the logarithm of b:
2.
Rearrange this equation to make x the subject:
Our starting point is to move across the equation by multiplying both sides by it:
Now we can move by dividing both sides by it:
Finally, we take a log10 of both sides to cancel the exponentiation of x and isolate:
3.
Isolate r in the following equation:
We start by moving across the equals sign by dividing both sides by it:
Now we just need to make both sides exponents of e to cancel the natural log of r:
4.
In the equation below, isolate c:
First, we move to cancel the logarithm by making the exponent of base 10:
Now we just need to move b across the equals sign to isolate c by dividing both sides by it:
We continue with equations next. This time looking at how we deal with fractions.
