Lesson 6 - Mashing Technology

Although mashing technology has quite a grand title, it has quite a simple definition. Mashing technology is the equipment we use to mash and the systems we use to control it.

For our discussion of mash technology, we will classify it according to the mashing activity it undertakes. Our four categories are:

1. Pre-mashing technology – the mixing of water and grist

2. Mash heating technology – raising the temperature of the mash to the required extent in the required time

3. Mash agitation technology – full mixing of the mash, distribution of heat and the movement of the mash over the heating surfaces

4. Mash transfer technology – pumping the mash to wort separation or the mash kettle
