Lesson Sign-Off

There is no simple formula for deciding the best method to create water perfect for brewing. It very much depends on what your brewery wants. However, this lesson has demonstrated that there are several treatments and processes available for the brewer to use, in order to achieve the desired water specification.

This lesson dealt with the various physical and chemical procedures that we can use for water treatment, leading into the brewery. We also explored the processes used for making water potable. We examined all additional treatment processes available at the brewery, to enable the brewer to prepare water to the correct quality specifications. This should help us successfully create water that is deemed worthy of use for brewing.

You should now be able to:

  1. Describe the principles of operation for the equipment that can help us to create the ideal product water.
  2. Describe the various treatments that can alter the inorganic content of water, consistent with its various applications.
  3. Explain how the organic and halogen content of water can be reduced/ eliminated to avoid generating potential flavour taints.
  4. Describe how we sterilise water within the brewery.

A self-assessment lesson will now follow. This will give you the opportunity to determine the level to which you have met these learning outcomes.
