Lesson 2 - Water
In this lesson we take a closer look at water from a utilities perspective. We will consider different forms of water treatment and look at the equipment required and operation thereof. The focus will be on treatment required for process and service water. Water chemistry will not be covered in any detail, as this is covered in Diploma Brewing Module 1.
Point of Reflection – Reconvene
Welcome back! So, what were your thoughts?
A sand filter and an ion exchanger have the following advantages:
-
Can handle larger particles without clogging
-
Older technology and potentially easier to operate
-
Potentially cheaper equipment costs
An ultrafiltration and RO system has the following advantages:
-
Smaller footprint
-
Removes bacteria and viruses better
-
Virtually continuous system with less need for backflush and regeneration
-
Far lower use of regeneration chemicals
-
Modular, so can be upgraded easily
