Lesson 2 - Barley

As already mentioned, barley is the fourth biggest cereal crop globally. Most is not used for alcoholic beverage production but for animal feed. Only around 20% is used for malting. The distilling and food industry competes with brewers for the best malt. Drinks such as Milo and Horlicks are made with malted barley or wheat. Global barley demand is met by planting barley that grows at different rates, at different times of the year. Also, barley can be stored for at least a year without a significant decline in quality.
