Lesson 2 - Barley

First, here are a couple of fun facts about barley:

Malted barley is used in different products. These include distilled alcoholic beverages, chocolates, vinegar, breakfast food, and thickening agents in soups.

Barley determined the English shoe size! Edward I decreed that three barley kernels should equate to one inch. This meant that if a child’s foot measured 13 kernels, their shoe size was size 13.

The majority of barley is used for animal feed. To be used for malting, barley must meet strict quality specifications. Any barley that does not meet these specifications is used as feed barley.
