Maths for Diploma Studies
This lesson is designed to provide the background knowledge in maths required to study CIBD Diplomas successfully. It will describe the basics of maths before detailing the more complex concepts encountered in CIBD lessons. Techniques for working with numbers, equations, and units will also be described.
Rearranging Equations – When the Formula has Two Terms that Contain the Subject we need to Isolate Reinforcement Questions
1.
Rearrange the equation below to make x the subject:
First, we expand the brackets by multiplying the terms in the brackets by the term outside, yielding:
Now we need to bring all of the x terms to the same side of the equation by adding 21x to both sides:
Next, move all of the non x terms to the other side of the equation by adding 5a to both sides:
Then we factorise the left-hand side of the equation by x:
We then divide both sides of the equation by the bracketed items next to x:
2.
Isolate m in this equation:
First, we multiply both sides of the equation by t to get:
Then factorise by m:
Next, we make m, the subject of the equation, by dividing both sides by v - u:
3.
Isolate b in the following equation:
We would first bring all of the b terms to the same side by subtracting 3b from both sides:
Then we move all non-b terms to the other side of the equation by adding c to both sides:
Next, we factorise the left-hand side of the equation by b:
Finally, we divide both sides of the equation by the bracketed terms adjacent to b:
4.
Make x the subject in the following equation:
We start by expanding both brackets by multiplying the terms inside by the terms outside:
We need to make active in the equation by changing how it is written:
Now we move all x terms to the left-hand side of the equation by subtracting from both sides:
Then we move all non-x terms to the right-hand side of the equation by subtracting from both sides:
Now we factorise the left-hand side of the equation by x:
And then we can simplify the right-hand side of the equation:
Finally, we divide both sides of the equation by the bracketed items adjacent to the x term:
5.
Rearrange this equation to make b the subject:
First, let’s get rid of the fraction by multiplying both sides by the denominator:
Then, expand the brackets by multiplying by P:
Now we bring all of the b terms to the same side of the equation by subtracting ab from both sides:
Next, we factorise by b:
Now we can move Pd across the equation by adding it to both sides:
And finally, we can divide both sides of the equation by :
In the next section, will we learn what to do when a term appears on both sides of the equation.
