Lesson 9 - Heat Exchangers SAQ
This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the Heat Exchangers lesson and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q2
* Name the parts (a) to (f) of a plate heat exchanger in the image below. Explain the purpose of each component.
Response:
(a) Plate
The plates are the surface across which heat transfers from one fluid to another.
(b) Distribution ports
The distribution ports create four distribution passages along the length of the heat exchanger. These distribution passages are the pathway for the product and utility fluid to both enter and leave the exchanger.
(c) End cover
Along with the tightening bolts, the end covers (one at each end of the exchanger) create a frame that holds the plate pack together. The end covers are the point of attachment for the inlet and outlet piping of the heat exchanger.
(d) Guide bar
The guide bar holds the plate pack and end covers in position when the exchanger is opened.
(e) Tightening bolt
Together with the end covers, the tightening bolts create a frame that holds the plate pack together. Along with the tightening nuts and bearing boxes, the tightening bolts are used to squeeze the plates and gaskets together, making them watertight.
(f) Shroud
A shroud protects the plate pack from environmental elements. It is also a precautionary safety measure, so that if there is a leak on the exchanger, it is contained and cannot harm anyone.
