Lesson Sign-off

This lesson concluded our study of pumps. It focused on the unwanted generation of gas or vapour from the liquid being pumped – cavitation. It then discussed the means by how we can ensure that cavitation does not occur when operating pumps.

You should now be able to:

  1. Describe the process of cavitation including its causes and consequences for product quality and equipment integrity.

  2. Compare and contrast the related concept of available net positive suction head and required net positive suction head.

  3. Apply the concept of net positive suction head to pump operation and system design to ensure that cavitation does not occur.

A self-assessment lesson now follows, which will allow you to determine the level to which you have attained the above outcomes.
