Lesson 10 - Control of Fluid Flow 2
This lesson will conclude our study of pumps. It will focus on two topics that deal with the unwanted generation of gas or vapour from the liquid being pumped – cavitation. It will then discuss the means by how we can ensure that cavitation does not occur when operating pumps.
Lesson Information
Pre-requisite Knowledge:
-
Principles of Fluid Mechanics 1 (Fluid Mechanics/Lesson 2)
-
Principles of Fluid Mechanics 2 (Fluid Mechanics/Lesson 4)
-
Principles of Fluid Mechanics 3 (Fluid Mechanics/Lesson 6)
-
Control of Fluid Flow 1 (Fluid Mechanics/Lesson 8)
Learning Outcomes:
-
Describe the process of cavitation, including its causes and consequences for product quality and equipment integrity.
-
Compare and contrast the related concepts of available net positive suction head and required net positive suction head.
-
Apply the concept of net positive suction head to pump operation and system design to ensure that cavitation does not occur.
