Maths for Diploma Studies
This lesson is designed to provide the background knowledge in maths required to study CIBD Diplomas successfully. It will describe the basics of maths before detailing the more complex concepts encountered in CIBD lessons. Techniques for working with numbers, equations, and units will also be described.
Point of Reflection – Reconvene
Welcome back! So, what were your thoughts?
Right, let’s start with the calculation inside the brackets:
This give us
Then we calculate the exponents – in this case, 8 squared:
82 = 64
Our calculation is now:
4 + 64 × 6
Then move to the multiplication:
64 × 6 = 384
Finally, we do the addition:
4 + 384 = 388
Check for errors
It’s easy to get distracted when undertaking multiple actions and lose sight of what you are looking for. The answer should be in the range you are expecting, and don’t forget to include the units. If the question is how warm a bath should be and your answer is 4x1012 K (really, really hot), something has gone wrong, and you need to look back through your workings and units.
To help reinforce what we have just learned, on the next page there are some practice questions. Answers and explanations can be revealed by clicking on show answer.
