Lesson 5 - Wort and Beer Analysis SAQ
This lesson enables you to test yourself on the material covered in the Beer and Wort Analysis lesson, and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q2
*What type of column do we use in each of the following types of chromatography?
Explain why there is a diversity of materials.
Response:
a) Gas chromatography for ABV analysis
For ABV analysis we use a porous polymer.
b) Ion chromatography
For ion chromatography we use an ion-exchange column.
c) Gas liquid chromatography
For gas liquid chromatography we use a layer of liquid on a solid matrix.
d) HPLC for wort sugars
In HPLC for wort sugars we use a silica column.
We use different columns for different analyses because the components of interest need to have an affinity for the column material. For example, ions have an affinity to the charges in an ion-exchange column.
