Lesson 3 - Principles of Process Control SAQ
This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the Principles of Process Control lesson and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q5
** Discuss the advantages of using VSDs compared to either not using them at all, or to using mechanical means with which to control outputs.
Response:
There are many advantages to using VSDs. These include:
-
VSDs use power more efficiently. The motor is governed to the speed and energy usage that matches the requirement of the delivery; it does not rely on other systems to mitigate the delivery when it is higher than required.
-
VSD motors are less stressed because they only deliver what is needed, this results in decreased wear and tear.
-
Torque and slip are easily controlled with a VSD.
-
VSDs can change direction easily.
-
VSDs can provide more information about the process and feed this back.
