Lesson Sign-off

This lesson dealt with process control. It explored exactly what it is and explained why it is important. It examined the various levels within process control systems and identified the associated equipment. It also took a detailed look at the various automation communication and control elements. It finally explained how to read a P&ID diagram.

You should now be able to:

  1. Explain how the different components within a process control system relate to the different levels of control.

  2. Compare the different options available for control (PLC/PC/standalone controllers).

  3. Explain the workings of control elements such as pneumatic control valves and VSDs.

A self-assessment lesson now follows, which will allow you to determine the level to which you have attained the above outcomes.
