Lesson 11 - Jacketed Vessels SAQ
This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the Jacketed Vessel lesson and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q5
* You inspect the inside of a mashing vessel at your brewery and it looks dirty. What could be the reasons for this?
Response
The following are causes of dirty heat transfer surfaces in jacketed vessels:
-
Vessel cleaning has not been effective due to either a low detergent strength, a shortened cleaning time, or poor mechanical action due to, e.g. a blocked sprayball.
-
Vessel cleaning is not being carried out at the required frequency.
-
The operating level of the vessel is not adequately covering the jackets.
-
There is insufficient agitation of the product fluid inside the vessel.
-
The utilities fluid temperature is outside of the design parameters. This is most commonly seen where steam is the utility fluid and high steam temperatures cause excessive burn on the heat transfer surface.
