Lesson 4 - The Mashing Process
This lesson discusses the process of mashing. It provides an overview and sets out the objectives of the process before explaining what parameters need to be controlled to ensure success. It describes the various methods used to mash and their impact on the wort produced. Finally, it details the composition of wort produced by mashing.
Methods of Mashing
If we were to ask every brewery in the world to outline their mashing process, we would encounter quite a broad range of techniques. That said, the majority will use similar methods, and it is possible to divide all methods into two groups.
These are:
-
Isothermal mashing
-
Temperature-programmed mashing (either single-vessel, double or mashing decoction)
Let’s start with isothermal mashing.
