Self-Assessment Questions

1.         ***For the most commonly used metals in the brewery compile a table indicating the different properties of each material.

As a guideline, the following metals should be considered:

Mild steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel (SS304), stainless steel (SS316), duplex stainless steel (SAF2205), titanium, copper, and aluminium.

As a guideline, the following properties should be considered:

Thermal conductivity, strength, weldability, ductility (formability), corrosion resistance, resistance to alkalis, resistance to acids, resistance to chlorides, and price.

Gradings should be low (L), medium (M) or high (H).

Using this information, comment on the potential use of these materials in the brewery providing reasons for your answers.

2.         ***You are working on a project which will be installing a new fermenting vessel and associated pump, valves and pipework. What specifications would you give potential suppliers to ensure it is hygienic?

3.         ***Your plant manager has just told you that hygienic design is expensive and cannot be justified. What reasons would you give to show that his/her statement is not valid?

4.         ***You have been asked by the owner of a small brewery to make a recommendation on the material for a 150 L fermenter. The owner has been able to find suppliers of a high-density polyethylene tank and an SS304L tank. What advice would you give the owner?
