Lesson 5 - Process Instrumentation SAQ
This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the Process Instrumentation lesson and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q4
** You need to measure the flowrate of wort at wort cooling, which is run at 100 hL/hr.
a) What are the factors that would influence your choice of instrumentation?
b) What process requirements should you contemplate and what are the accompanying financial considerations?
Response:
The process requirements and financial considerations that impact your choice of instrumentation include:
-
The temperature of the product (assume 10-90°C) needs to be considered, along with the cleaning chemicals that may be used. This will also require a hygienic instrument.
-
We know the flowrate is 100 hL/hr, so the instrument should measure within this range. Potentially, a flowmeter that can handle 0-200 hL/hr should be specified.
-
Wort cooling total volume is used to account for volumes produced, and as such, is a critical measurement. A high degree of precision and accuracy is required. The instrument should also be reliable.
-
The external environment would be subject to frequent cleaning, so the instrument must be robust and able to withstand being cleaned with water sprays.
-
The pipework needs to be considered. To ensure accuracy in mass flow and magflow meters, several pipe diameters of straight pipe are required both before and after the instrument.
-
The instrument needs to be specified for the correct communication protocol.
-
Both mass flow and magflow meters would be suitable. Mass flow meters are more expensive but will provide a density reading as well. Therefore, if the budget allows, this should be considered.
