Lesson 9 - Refrigeration Technology SAQ
This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the Refrigeration Technology lesson and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q2
* What are important factors to consider when selecting a primary refrigerant?
Response:
The key considerations are:
-
ODP – the ODP should be 0, or close to it.
-
GWP – the lower the GWP, the better.
-
Toxicity – it should have low, or no, toxicity.
-
Flammability – a low flammability, or no flammability, is best.
-
Refrigeration performance – the primary refrigerant should:
-
Have a high latent heat of vaporisation.
-
Have a pressure above atmospheric conditions at the point of vaporisation in order to avoid vacuum conditions.
-
Have a pressure that is not very high at the point of condensation, which will avoid the high equipment costs normally associated with high pressures. The condensation temperature is linked to ambient conditions.
-
Have a high COP for the particular process requirements.
-
-
Legal restrictions – the refrigerant should not be restricted or planned to be phased out.
-
Cost – the lower the cost, the better.
