Suggested Response - Q3

** Your brewery is experiencing water hammer on the steam lines. You have been asked to check the design and operation, and then make recommendations to eliminate the problem. What are the key things you should look for?

Response:

Firstly, the operation of all drainage trap points should be checked to ensure that they are working properly. Once this is done, the overall design should be checked to ensure that the steam line design is correct. The following points should be considered:

  • Steam velocity should be < 25 m/s.

  • The lines should slope slightly (a 1% slope is usually recommended if the fall is in the direction of flow; a 2.5% slope is recommended if the line rises in the direction of flow).

  • Condensate drainage points are also required at intervals of 30-50 m, and at any low points.

  • The take-off lines for condensate must be sized so that the condensate cannot be carried across it.

  • The drainage point must be fitted in the vertical orientation.

  • The steam trap must come off the side in order to prevent debris carrying across.

  • Steam off-takes should always be positioned on the top of the steam main.
