Lesson 5 - Health and Safety SAQ
This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the lesson on Health and Safety and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q2
* Write short answers to the following questions:
a) What is a HAZOP and when might a HAZOP be completed?
Response:
HAZOP is a hazard and operability study. It is best done on a process or system during design phase but can be done on existing systems.
b) What is an MSDS, and what should you do with it?
Response:
An MSDS refers to a material safety data sheet. It must be read to understand the key precautions required to store and use the material safely. It is important to file it somewhere safe and accessible for future reference.
c) What is the minimum level (concentration) of malt dust that needs to be suspended in the air to provide a potentially explosive atmosphere?
Response:
Malt dust must be greater than 50 g/m3 to provide a potentially explosive atmosphere.
d) Which is lighter than air: ammonia gas or carbon dioxide gas?
Response:
Ammonia gas is lighter than carbon dioxide. Therefore, ammonia detectors need to be at a high level.
Carbon dioxide gas is heavier than air and will settle at the bottom of tanks.
e) Put the following risk control measures in order of preferred use (i.e. which, if possible, should you apply first?)
