Lesson 3 - Cleaning Systems and Control SAQ
This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the Cleaning Systems and Control lesson, and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q3
**List the detergents typically used to remove a) inorganic and b) organic soils. What additives are added to their formulations and why are these added?
Response:
a) Acids
b) Caustic soda
Additives are used to build the detergent and improve its shortcomings.
Surfactants are added to reduce surface tension. Lowering surface tension allows the cleaning agent to spread across the cleaning surface, penetrating the soil from underneath and also on the surface. This results in easier wetting and much faster soil removal.
Sequestrants are added to complex with metal ions, thereby preventing scale precipitating. The sequestrants bind metal ions, keeping them in solution.
CIP acids are formulated with corrosion inhibitors as strong acids, e.g. nitric acid is corrosive to stainless steel.
