Attributes

Pre-mashing Technology

Justification

Best oxygen control

Mechamasher

The Mechamasher can be flooded with deoxygenated water before use and can deliver mash under a cushion of deoxygenated water to the base of the MCV. Wet milling is a very close second.

Worst oxygen control

Steel’s masher

The Steel’s masher is the only masher that knocks air into the mash as it hydrates it.

Gentlest

Wet milling

With wet milling, the mash is gently pumped to the bottom of the vessel directly after crushing, so there is minimal damage to the grist/mash.

Least gentle

Steel’s masher

Steels masher has the highest level of mechanical action and drops the mash from a height into the mashing vessel.

Easiest to clean

Vortex

The part of the vortex pre-masher that the grist flows through is just a hollow tube with a slot where the water comes out and then a curve to the side of the vessel after a concentric reducer. The surfaces are smooth, so easy to clean. A spray ball in the masher rinses this tube at the end of mashing in to make CIP easier.

Hardest to clean

Steel’s masher

Although there are more bits to clean in the Mechamasher, the whole of the unit can be flushed after use and filled with cleaning solution, so the Steel’s masher comes last again! The top part of the mixing cylinder in the Steel’s masher stays empty during mashing in but is splashed with mash which dries on. Because the end is fully open, it is not possible to flood during cleaning and rinsing, so it is more difficult to clean.
