Examples

Using the typed online exam system it is not possible to represent equations in the type-set format that you are used to seeing them in the learning material and they must be typed in a text only format.  The examples below are used to illustrate this.

The Darcy-Weisbach equation is depicted in the lessons as:

increment P equals 4 phi L over d rho u squared

To write this in the online exam it can be represented using Greek symbols as:

ΔP = 4 x φ x (L / d) x ρ x u²

or

ΔP = 4 φ (L / d) ρu²

Where:

ΔP = Pressure change (Pascals)

φ = Friction factor (dimensionless)

L = Pipe length (m)

d = Pipe inside diameter (m)

ρ = Fluid density (Kg/m²)

u = Flow velocity (m/s)

Alternatively it can be written more simply by using standard letters in place of the Greek letters and without the use of superscript:

dP = 4 x F x (L / d) x p x u^2

or

dP = 4F(L / d) pu^2

Where:

dP = Pressure change (Pascals)

F = Friction factor (dimensionless)

L = Pipe length (m)

d = Pipe inside diameter (m)

p = Fluid density (Kg/m^³)

u = Flow velocity (m/s)
