Lesson 9 - Gases SAQ
This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the Gases lesson and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
Suggested Response - Q4
** a) How does a Roots blower differ from other positive displacement compressors?
b) What are the advantages of a Roots blower?
c) Where would you use a Roots blower and why?
Response:
a) With a Roots blower, the air is compressed not within the compressor itself (as with other positive displacement compressors) but at the discharge.
b) One advantage of a Roots blower is that it uses less energy as it operates at lower pressures. Roots blowers are also less expensive and require less maintenance.
c) A Roots blower can be used for operations such as spent grain removal, pneumatic grain transport, and vessel blowdowns. These applications don’t require very high pressures, and all operate in the range of 200-300 kPa which is within the range of a Roots blower.
