Key Information about the Learning Material
This lesson aims to inform you of the changes in the learning material that supports the Diploma Brewing Module 3. The learning material has been updated to ensure that it reflects modern, global practices. It has also been structured differently in order to support your self-directed learning experience.
Unit Structure
Each unit has been broken down into a series of lessons, all of which follow a similar pattern.
The unit will always begin with a lesson that introduces the unit. For example, the Resource Management unit begins with a lesson titled ‘Introduction to Resource Management’. This lesson provides a brief overview of the topics that you will study in the forthcoming unit.
Teaching lessons
After the unit introduction lesson, you will be presented with a teaching lesson. Each teaching lesson has a number of learning outcomes, all of which are linked to the syllabus. Each lesson should take no more than two hours (on average) to complete. Some take less time, and, perhaps, a few may take more time than the average. To improve your online self-directed learning experience, you will come across several ‘tools’ throughout the course. These ‘tools’ each have their own purpose and are described below.
Key point – This tool highlights a key fact, essential for success in the exam. This tool can also be used to summarise a key principle you should recall from previous learning.
Point of reflection – This tool allows you to pause and reflect on what you’ve just learned; it uses a question and answer format.
Did you Know – This tool informs you of an interesting fact that complements the learning.
Further Reading – This tool provides you with a link to an external learning resource that aids the teaching lesson.
Worked example – This tool provides you with examples of calculations that you might use in the examination.
Within the lessons, we will occasionally provide video links. These videos are included to make the content more interactive and engaging, and of course to help explain the processes and concepts we have written about.
Self-assessment question lessons
Each teaching lesson has an associated self-assessment question (SAQ) lesson. SAQ lessons provide the opportunity for you to test yourself on the material covered in the previous lesson and determine the level to which you have attained the expected outcomes.
Each unit ends with a final self-assessment question lesson. These final lessons aim to integrate the learning from all lessons within the unit. Please note, the Resource Management unit does not have an end of unit SAQ lesson.
We will utilise three types of self-assessment questions:
-
Short & retrospective: these are short questions. They will require you to look back to the previous lesson and refresh yourself with the learning material needed in order to successfully answer the questions.
This type of question will be designated with a single asterisk*. -
Short & progressive: these are short questions. They are more ‘searching’ and are intended to make you think more deeply about the question, in a more holistic and progressive manner. To do this you may need to read beyond the learning material provided or discuss it with your colleagues/tutors/other learners. Do not worry too much if you find these questions quite challenging; they are intended to be just that!
This type of question will be designated with two asterisks**. -
Long: these are longer and require you to integrate knowledge from the entire unit and possibly relate this information to other parts of the brewing process. To do this you may need to read beyond the learning material provided or discuss with your colleagues/tutors/other learners. Do not worry too much if you find these questions quite challenging; they are intended to be just that! These questions are more likely to form part of an SAQ Lesson at the end of a unit, so may not appear in all SAQ Lessons.
This type of question will be designated with three asterisks***.
Please note that these questions are designed to reinforce learning and to help you check your understanding. Whilst in some instances they may appear to be similar to exam questions, they have not been constructed with this purpose in mind.
Multiple Choice Questions
In addition to the SAQ lessons, you can also test your understanding by answering multiple choice questions in quizzes at the end of each unit. Please note your performance in these quizzes has no bearing on your examination result and you can attempt them as many times as you like.
