Unit 2 - Fluid Mechanics
-
To do: View To do: Go through the activity to the end
This lesson introduces the Fluid Mechanics unit. It also contains a brief overview of the topics that you will study in the forthcoming unit.

This lesson considers the unique property of viscosity of fluids (gases and liquids) which allows them to flow. It explores the classification of fluid viscosity behaviour by so-called Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. It will also examine the nature of static fluids, which will include the concept of pressure and head. The lesson finishes with a discussion on the different types of instrumentation for measuring pressure.

This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the lesson on Principles of Fluid Mechanics 1, and to determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.
-
To do: View To do: Go through the activity to the end
This lesson will extend our knowledge of fluid mechanics by considering two important laws: the conservation of both mass and energy. We will also examine the various flow regimes which are present within a pipe or duct carrying moving fluids.

This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the lesson on Principles of Fluid Mechanics 2, and to determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.

To do: View To do: Go through the activity to the end
This lesson considers the factors which contribute to pressure loss when fluid follows through a pipe or duct system. It will examine in detail, the factors which contribute to frictional pressure losses and also losses due to the presence of fittings in the pipeline.

This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the lesson on Principles of Fluid Mechanics 3, and to determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.

This lesson will consider two main classifications of pumps: centrifugal and positive displacement. These will be introduced together, with aspects of their design and operation. The lesson will also pull together various fluid mechanics concepts from previous lessons, such as the Darcy-Weisbach equation and the use of loss-coefficient to calculate pressure drops in pipe systems. It will use this information to then size pumps for particular pipe systems.

This lesson allows you to test yourself on the material covered in the Control of Fluid Flow 1 lesson and determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.

This lesson will conclude our study of pumps. It will focus on two topics that deal with the unwanted generation of gas or vapour from the liquid being pumped – cavitation. It will then discuss the means by how we can ensure that cavitation does not occur when operating pumps.

To do: View To do: Go through the activity to the end
This lesson provides the opportunity for you to test yourself on the material covered in the lesson on Control of Fluid Flow 2, and to determine the level to which you have met the learning outcomes.

This lesson will consider valve technology, which is used to control fluid flow. It will cover the control functions of on-off, and modulating flow control, together with a description of the various valve types which can achieve these functions. The lesson will conclude with thoughts on the issue of managing valve leakage to avoid cross-stream contamination.
