Suggested Response - Q1

*Define potable water. Suggest five practical characteristics that the brewer would want to see in potable water.

Response:

Potable water means that the water is fit for human consumption, and safe to drink without detrimental impact to your health over a lifetime of consumption.

Practically, for the brewer, this means that the water needs to be:

  • Microbiologically free of pathogens
  • Colourless and clear
  • Tasteless and odourless
  • Of optimal pH: close to neutral pH (7.0)
  • Free from contaminants such as heavy metal Ions and pesticides
